The Wrong Way Round
18 June 2010
With the dual start on the 1st and 10th tees at Pebble Beach for the US Open, what are people's views on starting on the 10th. For me it ruins the round, since the holes are not played in the order intended. I recently played at Mystic Dunes in Orlando, and ended up playing the great show hole 11th hole par 3 as my second as we had to start on the 10th. So rather than having had 10 holes under my belt and a warmed up swing, I only had 1. So should the holes be played in the order intended, or perhaps we should all dual start in the monthly medals so we can all get back in the bar for Sunday lunch.

At our club we always have 2 tee starts due to the majority of members wishing to start between 08:00 and 10:00. I don't mind which tee I start from BUT the big problem is that if you are first off you have a very steady pace until you catch up the last of the players from the other tee and everything seems to grind to a halt.

I don't really see any problem - sometimes with the large fields in tour events it would be impractical not to have a 2 tee start and that's been the case for many years. In any case firstly the pros are well warmed up before starting play so it should be no problem - and secondly it's the same for everyone since at the USGA comp the 1st and 10th groups alternate on Thursday and Friday.

If you play in busy resort areas like Myrtle Beach, SC then 2 tees starts are pretty much the norm especially for morning rounds - the only problem arises when the first group off the 1st finishes the first nine before the last group of the 10th, leading to inevitable delays.

In amatuer club medals or opens it's unlikely there will ever be sufficient numbers to warrant 2 tee starts, but it wouldn't put me up nor down. You've still got to play the holes one at a time.
