Milestone Winter Competition winners square up at Manor House

news_508_17th.JPG

During the winter, Milestone Event Management, organisers of Flying Club Swingers, ran a competition to find the best medal and stableford scores of the winter. Alastair Price and Brian Trendell walked off with the prizes and the opportunity to test out the Season 7 Final Course, Manor House Golf Club.

With the winner’s play-off ending all-square, we leave it to Alastair and Brian to give their opinions on the course that will test both the European and Rest of the World.

The course was in good condition and is an interesting layout. However, we were both glad of having a buggy as the course in places is uphill and down dale.

Set in 365 acres of rolling countryside on the southern edge of the Cotswolds, the course was designed by BBC's Peter Alliss and Clive Clark and starts off gently with a short Par 4.

It is reasonably new, having only opened in 1992, however the maturity of the setting makes it seem older with oaks and beech trees line the manicured fairways. Alliss and Clark seem to have made the most of the undulating topography of the land. The River Bybrook brings the layout to life with a mix of beauty and drama, especially at the "signature hole" 17th, an excellent par 3 (see picture).

I have already mentioned one of the par 3's, but there a four other excellent one-shot holes ranging from 150yds to 213yds, giving all of the bag a workout.

The Par 5's at the Manor House are all modest in length therefore providing plenty of birdie chances. The 12th is perhaps the exception. This is Stroke Index 2 and is probably the best hole on the layout. The land tumbles downhill and after negotiating the valley you are presented with a sanctuary of a raised green surrounded by bunkers.

The closing hole is pleasing on the eye, just like the village of Castle Combe, guarded by a swathe of bunkers and interconnecting ponds. We both finished with par's with the match ending All Square - probably a fair result due to playing the course for the first time and both of us being caught out on a couple of occasions.

Once again I think Virgin Atlantic have picked an excellent venue for the 2010 Flying Club Swingers Final.
