Here we look more closely at one of the clubs recently reviewed:
Avondale Golf Club, NSW, Australia
The Avondale golf course, founded in 1926, is set in the leafy suburb of Pymble on Sydney's north shore and is one of the most peaceful courses in the metropolitan area in that there are no major roads on the course's boundaries. This delightful atmosphere allows the golfer to play with very few distractions and she or he can concentrate on their game and their tussle with the course without the intrusions of outside noises.
Designed by Eric Apperly it survived the devastating storms and bushfires of the 1990s when much of the surrounding vegetation was destroyed and the club house was itself under threat until the winds changed direction. The course is now thriving once more with bushland and trees lining the fairway.
A strategic and well designed championship course standing at 5980m long, trees play a big part here and accuracy is essential. The layout starts innocently enough but gradually builds up into a toughness that makes even the finest golf think clearly and positively. Play anywhere close to your handicap at this beautiful course and you'll drive away from the spic-n-span white clubhouse a very happy player.
